Local authorities reported that in just four hours, the amount of rainfall equivalent to a month’s worth fell, causing flooding and landslides. In Messina on Sicily, efforts continue to clear the aftermath of severe flooding.
The city’s authorities described the event as “exceptional in scale” due to the heavy rains triggering landslides. Mud and debris flooded many streets in the village of Zafferana after the river overflowed, blocking several homes. Firefighters rescued four drivers who were trapped when water flooded a tunnel.
The Italian National Fire Service, Vigili del Fuoco, reported conducting more than 100 rescue operations related to the storm. Rescuers used inflatable boats to evacuate residents trapped in their homes. According to the Italian Civil Protection Department, there were no casualties or injuries.
The Mayor of Messina, Federico Basile, told local media that emergency services are actively clearing roads not only of water but also of mud and debris.
Heavy rains also affected Calabria on the mainland, prompting the regional mayor to urge residents to stay indoors for safety.
