In Spain, a hacker who carried out a series of cyberattacks on the USA, NATO, the UN, and other strategic targets has been arrested. According to AFP, the arrest followed an investigation launched in February 2024, after a business association in Madrid reported data theft.
Over the course of a year, the hacker carried out more than 40 attacks on various international and Spanish institutions, including the US Army, NATO, the UN, the Ministries of Defense and Education of Spain, as well as other organizations such as the Civil Guard, universities, and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
According to the police, the hacker gained access to employee and client data, as well as confidential documents, which were then sold or published online. The hacker used the dark web to communicate under various pseudonyms and anonymous apps to avoid identification.
His identity was established after the last attack in December 2024, when he breached the systems of the Civil Guard and the Spanish Ministry of Defense. The criminal was arrested in Alicante, located in the southeastern part of the country.
The hacker is suspected of disclosing classified information, unauthorized access, and damaging IT systems, as well as money laundering. He also had more than 50 cryptocurrency accounts with various assets.
