Hungary says it will consider leaving WHO after U.S. decision

The office of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated on Thursday, February 6, that Hungary will consider leaving the World Health Organization (WHO) following a similar decision by the United States.

This was announced by the head of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, Gergely Gulyás.

He said, “If the most powerful country in the world decides to leave an international organization, I think the Hungarian government would act cautiously if it were weighing whether it should take this step.”

“We may conclude that we don’t need to do this, we might come to another decision, of course, but it is certainly worth considering,” Gulyás added.

After his inauguration, Trump carried out a promised flurry of executive orders on his first day in office, reversing dozens of decisions made by his predecessor, Joe Biden. Among other things, he ordered the U.S. to withdraw from the World Health Organization, which has already raised concerns in Germany.

Commenting on the decision of the new U.S. president, the EU expressed hope that it could still be reconsidered.
