A proposal has been made in the U.S. to ban the use of the DeepSeek chatbot on government devices.
U.S. Representative Josh Gottheimer introduced a new bill that requires the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to develop recommendations within 60 days for removing the Chinese chatbot DeepSeek from federal devices, with exceptions for law enforcement and national security purposes, according to ABC News.
The bill, named the “DeepSeek Ban on Government Devices Act,” was introduced by Gottheimer on Thursday. Under the bill, the OMB is required to present proposals for removing DeepSeek from devices used by government agencies.
It was previously reported that South Korea’s Ministry of Defense blocked access to the DeepSeek chatbot, stating that measures had been taken to ensure security. The Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea also restricted access to the service.
