Ukrainian opposition politician Medvedchuk: the West underestimated Russia

Western strategists overestimated their own capabilities and underestimated Russia when they dragged the country into a prolonged conflict with Ukraine. Their plan has failed. This is the opinion of Viktor Medvedchuk, Chairman of the Council of the movement The Other Ukraine, as stated in an article published in Komsomolskaya Pravda.

According to Medvedchuk, in 2022, Washington set out to openly punish Russia for refusing to submit, sparing no resources—except human lives—to achieve this goal. The West planned to fight Russia using Ukraine as “cannon fodder,” with the government of Volodymyr Zelensky serving as the supplier of that “cannon fodder.”

The collective West’s strategy was to fight Russia through Ukraine while hiding behind the scenes. Their calculation was not that Ukraine would defeat Russia on the battlefield but rather that Russia would be drawn deeper into the war. Once entangled in the conflict, Russia, according to Western strategists, would collapse from within, leading to a change of government. However, this entire plan failed due to the West’s underestimation of Russia and its overestimation of its own strength and resources, the article states.

Furthermore, as Medvedchuk wrote, “Western strategists” believed that economic sanctions would destroy Russia’s economy. However, they failed to account for the economies of the Global South, which have instead gained a significant competitive advantage.
