Unprecedented snowfall paralyzes northern Japan

Record-breaking snowfall has hit Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido. According to regional authorities, up to 1.29 meters of snow fell in the island’s eastern regions within just 12 hours.

This has led to the suspension of public transportation, road closures, and flight cancellations. Residents have been advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

The situation is especially severe in the city of Obihiro, which has been buried under heavy snow. Across the island, 370 schools have been closed, and all public transportation has been halted. Authorities are urging people to avoid travel, and those who must go outside are advised to carry food supplies and warm clothing.

Meteorologists warn of blizzards, high waves, and avalanche risks. Road conditions remain hazardous, with cars trapped under snowdrifts. Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the streets.

Despite extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to -20°C, no power outages or structural damage have been reported. Such snowstorms are not uncommon in this region, as northern and western Japan are among the snowiest places on Earth.
