NATO countries have discussed the possibility of sending troops to Greenland in light of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to use force to seize the island, The Telegraph reports, citing sources.
During the discussions, the application of NATO’s Article 5, which provides for collective defense if one of the Alliance’s members is attacked, was considered. However, this option was quickly rejected, as activating the article would require unanimous support from all 32 NATO member states, including the United States.
Instead, the Alliance countries turned to Article 4, which allows for urgent consultations in the event of a threat to a member state’s “territorial integrity, political independence, or security.” This measure was seen as a more suitable response.
