U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC), primarily in response to an arrest warrant issued against top Israeli officials.
On February 6, Trump signed an order authorizing financial and visa sanctions against “individuals and their family members who assist ICC investigations against U.S. citizens or our allies.”
Thursday had already been mentioned in the media as the expected day for Trump to approve such a decision.
Trump’s order was a response to the ICC’s arrest warrant for several high-ranking Israeli officials in connection with events in the Gaza Strip, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It is worth noting that the U.S. is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, which established the ICC.
During his first presidential term, Trump had already imposed initial sanctions and visa restrictions against ICC personnel for launching an investigation into possible war crimes in Afghanistan committed by the American military, Afghan forces, and crimes against humanity by the Taliban.
