Thousands of students and schoolchildren took to the streets of Athens, blocking traffic in the city center to protest delays in the investigation of the Tempi railway disaster, which occurred in February 2023.
The tragedy took place late on the night of February 28, when a passenger train traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki collided with a freight train. The crash resulted in the deaths of 57 people, most of whom were young.
Protesters chanted “Murderers! Murderers!” as they marched through the city, accompanied by hundreds of police officers, including special forces units. This demonstration followed a series of mass protests across the country. Just over a week ago, rallies took place in more than 100 cities across Greece, marking the largest demonstrations in the past decade.
A new wave of outrage was sparked by an audio recording published by local media, suggesting that some victims of the disaster may have died in a fire rather than from the collision itself. This contradicts the initial version of the investigation.
The next mass demonstration is scheduled for February 28, on the second anniversary of the tragedy.
