In 2024, Denmark recorded its lowest asylum intake in decades. According to the Danish Immigration Service, asylum was granted to fewer than 1,000 people — a total of 860. This marks only the second time in the past 40 years that the number of new refugees has been under 1,000.
For comparison, in 2022, 1,403 people were granted asylum in Denmark, and in 2023, the number was 1,343. During the peak years of the migration crisis caused by the war in Syria (2015-2016), these numbers were over 10,800 and nearly 7,500, respectively.
One of the main reasons for the decline in refugees is the stricter migration policy. Minister for Immigration and Integration Kaare Dybvad Bek emphasized the importance of controlling the influx of asylum seekers to ensure successful integration.
In Germany, the number of asylum applications dropped by 34% in 2024. Meanwhile, in Italy, the opposition is calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after the third unsuccessful attempt to implement a plan for relocating asylum seekers to Albania.
