In Romania, the initiative to dismiss President Klaus Iohannis has been introduced to Parliament for the third time. This comes after the president remained in office beyond his term due to the restart of the election process.
On February 10, the Romanian Parliament will consider the initiative for the first time, proposed by far-right forces. Two previous attempts to bring the issue to the agenda were unsuccessful, as the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, the party of the controversial Diana Șoșoacă (SOS), and the Party of Youth (POT) failed to gather enough signatures. However, they managed to gain support from the Save Romania Union (USR), which allowed them to collect 178 signatures, surpassing the minimum required 155.
For the initiative to succeed, 233 votes are needed, as well as an advisory opinion from the Constitutional Court. If successful, the next step would be holding a referendum on the president’s resignation within 30 days. Should the referendum result in approval, new presidential elections would be scheduled within 90 days.
The re-election of the Romanian president has already been set for early May. Klaus Iohannis, who is completing his second term, will not seek re-election. He recently called for an end to discussions regarding his resignation and urged focus on the upcoming elections.
