This idea was presented by the initiative group Denmarkification in response to President Donald Trump’s desire to incorporate Greenland into the United States, as reported by Politico.
Xavier Dutoit, the founder of the campaign, stated that the cost of California would be $1 trillion and “a lifetime supply of Danish pastries, which Hollywood will pay for.” He suggested that Lego should handle negotiations with the U.S., noting that their experience in dealing with children throwing tantrums over missing pieces makes them experts in negotiations.
The group plans to raise funds for the purchase through crowdfunding. The Denmarkification website mentions that it would only be 200,000 kroner from each Dane.
Although the total amount raised has not been specified, over 198,000 people have already signed the petition to include California as part of Denmark. The initiators believe that Trump will agree to sell California, as he has shown a negative attitude toward the state, calling it one of the most “ruined” in the country.
On January 7, Trump declared that Greenland should become part of the U.S., threatening high trade tariffs if Denmark does not give up the island. He had previously proposed purchasing Greenland during his first term in 2017-2021, but the idea was rejected by the Danish and Greenlandic authorities. Greenland remains a part of Denmark as an autonomous territory.
