A large protest took place in Madrid, where thousands expressed their dissatisfaction with the rising cost of housing in Spain, which has reached a new historic high.
This is the second such demonstration in the country in recent months. Protesters, rallying under the slogan “Decent and Sustainable Housing Now,” are calling for urgent action to address the housing affordability crisis, which they consider a “state of emergency.”
The march began in the Atocha district and ended at the Puerta del Sol square. According to the government delegation, 15,000 people participated, although organizers claim there were around 60,000. Participants raised a giant balloon shaped like a key, symbolizing the inaccessibility of housing.
Activists condemned the rising housing prices, which continue to increase, as well as the high number of evictions. At the end of last year, the average price per square meter in Spain hit a record €2,264. In Madrid, the cost of one square meter is €3,780.
