The Spanish government announced that it will grant one-year residence and work permits to approximately 25,000 migrants who were affected by the catastrophic floods in Valencia last year.
It is expected that the new measures, including the issuance of student visas, will assist both the migrants and their families. The Ministry of Migration emphasized that the main goal of the initiative is to protect vulnerable foreign citizens and prevent them from falling into an illegal status.
Additionally, Spain plans to legalize around 900,000 undocumented immigrants over the next three years, which is expected to help boost the workforce in light of the aging population.
The floods in Valencia, which claimed the lives of more than 220 people, were among the most devastating in Europe this century. Following the tragedy, the region requested €31 billion in aid from the central government.
