In early February, media reported on the illegal trade of Thai women’s eggs in Georgia.
Around 100 women were deceived and brought to the country, where they were forced to undergo medical procedures. Three of them were rescued with the support of the Thai police and Interpol.
The victims stated that Chinese intermediaries promised them payments of $12,000–$17,000 to become surrogate mothers but instead forced them to donate eggs monthly. Some women remain in the house from which the rescued victims were taken, claiming they are part of a legal surrogacy program and can leave freely.
Georgian police are investigating a human trafficking case. Babycam Medical Consulting Group, a Chinese company involved in the program, insists it operates legally. However, Thai authorities plan to request an investigation from China into possible criminal activities.
