The candidate for Chancellor of Germany from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, during her visit to Hungary on February 12, called Prime Minister Viktor Orban “an excellent role model” if her party comes to power.
According to Politico, during her first official meeting with Orban in Budapest, Weidel emphasized that AfD would follow Hungary’s example if given the opportunity to join the government. Weidel also made it clear that she intends to establish cooperation with Orban in Brussels.
We must work together to reform the European Union by any means. And this can only be done from the inside,” she stated, expressing her intention to dismantle “the bureaucratic, costly, and, in her opinion, corrupt structure.
Weidel’s party, AfD, and Orban’s party, Fidesz, belong to different political groups in the European Parliament – “Europe of Sovereign Nations” and “Patriots for Europe,” respectively.
Viktor Orban himself has openly supported AfD ahead of the early parliamentary elections on February 23. Recent polls show that AfD consistently holds second place, with 20% of German voters ready to support them, which, however, is not enough to form a government.
