U.S. faces egg crisis due to avian influenza

Egg prices are soaring in the U.S., and eggs are becoming increasingly difficult to find in stores. The cause is an outbreak of avian influenza, which has led to the death of millions of laying hens in recent months.

Some retailers, such as Trader Joe’s, have already implemented restrictions—limiting purchases to one carton per customer. The average price for a dozen eggs has reached $4.15, double the price from the summer of 2023, with prices in certain regions soaring to $10. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, egg prices are expected to rise another 20% this year.

The shortage has led to a surge in thefts. Recently, 100,000 eggs were stolen from a truck in Pennsylvania, valued at around $40,000. Similar incidents are being reported across the country.

The crisis is putting pressure on the administration of Donald Trump, who, upon returning to the White House, promised to lower prices. The egg shortage has now become another economic challenge for the president, and his critics are using the situation in political battles.
