The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called on the United States during a press conference to continue funding the organization until alternative solutions are found.
He emphasized that US support is crucial for the implementation of numerous WHO initiatives in regions such as Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Gaza.
Ghebreyesus highlighted that a significant portion of WHO’s health emergency response work is carried out with US funding. Previously, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order for the country’s withdrawal from WHO, and the new administration has expressed concerns that the organization is not sufficiently effective, is politically influenced, and demands too much financial support from the US.
Last week, Tedros also reported that due to the financial crisis caused by the US exit, WHO has been forced to freeze staff recruitment and limit travel.
