The French National Assembly has taken a significant step toward holding minors accountable for serious criminal offenses. On February 13, a bill aimed at enhancing responsibility for young offenders passed its first reading with strong support.
The legislation, introduced by President Macron’s “Together for the Republic” faction, received 125 votes in favor and 58 votes against.
Gabriel Attal, leader of the parliamentary group and former Prime Minister, explained that the bill’s goal is to “restore the authority of justice for juvenile offenders and their parents” in response to the “increasingly uncontrolled violence” displayed by youth.
The proposed bill includes provisions for quicker trials when there is sufficient evidence against minors and imposes tougher sanctions on parents.
