4.7 magnitude earthquake strikes near Lisbon, no reported damage

On Monday, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Lisbon region, with the epicenter located near Seixal, about 24 kilometers from Portugal’s capital.

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) reported that there were no personal injuries or material damage as a result of the tremor.

“Today, February 17, at 13:24 local time, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded at the stations of the mainland seismic network, with the epicenter located to the west of Seixal,” the agency stated.

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) also confirmed the event, stating that at 13:24, “a 4.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded at stations of the mainland seismic network, with the epicenter located approximately 14 kilometers southwest of Seixal.”

The IPMA added, “According to current information, this earthquake caused no human casualties or material damage, and was felt with a maximum intensity of V/VI (instrumental) (on the modified Mercalli scale) in the municipalities of Almada and Sesimbra.”
