The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking a ceasefire in Ukraine by Easter, April 20, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.
“The Trump administration has informed European officials that it wants to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine by Easter,” the report states.
Some sources described the timeline as ambitious and possibly unrealistic. One official suggested that a resolution by the end of the year is a more likely scenario.
Negotiations are set to begin this week in Saudi Arabia, involving high-ranking U.S. and Russian officials. Last week, Trump launched his peace initiative with a call to Vladimir Putin. His Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, reportedly shocked European officials by stating that “Europeans will be responsible for security guarantees and peacekeeping forces needed to ensure Ukraine’s stability post-agreement.”
In response, European officials are now working on a major defense and aid package for Kyiv. However, spending plans will not be publicly announced before Germany’s February 23 elections to avoid political controversy.
Several EU leaders have been invited to Paris on Monday to coordinate their response after U.S. officials made it clear that America’s commitment has limits. Discussions will focus on what immediate security guarantees European countries can offer to ensure they remain involved in peace talks.
