Ex-NATO chief says Trump’s actions amount to ‘high treason’

Willy Claes, the former NATO Secretary General from 1994 to 1995, has voiced strong disapproval over what he sees as the collapse of U.S. solidarity with Europe under President Donald Trump. The 86-year-old Belgian politician called the shift “high treason” and lamented the unprecedented chaos, especially given the historical U.S. support for Europe, from World War II to aiding Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

Claes criticized Vice President JD Vance’s recent speech at the Munich Security Summit, calling it “imbecilic.” Despite his frustration, Claes doesn’t believe NATO will dissolve. He noted that Trump is unlikely to withdraw from NATO due to Europe’s strategic importance, particularly with Russia as a neighboring threat. However, he pointed out that Europe cannot replace NATO with a European army, as the continent lacks sufficient unity.

Claes believes that Europe must uphold its relationship with the U.S. while taking on more responsibility. He also emphasized the need for stronger European defense and a revival of disarmament efforts. Although he acknowledged Russia’s hostility, he believes its military resources are running low.

Claes’ controversial career includes a forced resignation from NATO following a corruption scandal linked to the murder of Belgian politician André Cools in 1991. Claes was convicted of corruption and banned from holding public office for five years.
