Two more strong earthquakes strike Greek islands amid ongoing seismic activity

The Greek islands of Santorini and Amorgos, which have been experiencing increased seismic activity since late January, were hit by two significant earthquakes within an hour.

Early on February 18, two tremors—measuring 5.0 and 4.9 in magnitude—were recorded between Santorini and Amorgos. The quakes were also felt in Attica. Earlier, around 5 a.m., another 4.5-magnitude tremor struck the same area.

Seismic activity in the region has been ongoing since approximately January 26. Due to frequent tremors, which could be a precursor to a stronger earthquake, thousands of tourists and residents have left the islands. Schools on Santorini have been closed, and emergency response teams have been deployed.

Greek Minister of Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias announced plans to establish an evacuation port on Santorini to facilitate safe departures in case of a major earthquake.

The strongest quake in the recent series occurred on the evening of February 10, registering a magnitude of 5.3.
