EU may allocate 93 billion euros to defense sector

The European Union is considering the possibility of reallocating 93 billion euros, originally intended for economic recovery after the coronavirus pandemic, to the defense sector.

These funds, which remain unused under the European Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), could be directed towards strengthening the defense capabilities of EU countries. The Financial Times reports that this decision is being discussed in the context of increasing security threats, including from Russia and other global actors.

This move reflects growing concerns within the European Union regarding the geopolitical situation, as well as the need to increase military spending to enhance the defense capabilities of EU member states. The issue has become particularly pressing due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which raises questions about the stability of Eastern Europe and global security in general.

Redirecting funds to defense also highlights the need for a more intensive and coordinated approach among EU countries to security matters. The EU is considering not only traditional military expenditures but also innovations in defense technologies, cybersecurity, and other emerging threats it may face in the future.

It is expected that this reallocation of funds will be part of a broader reform program aimed at strengthening the EU’s military-political and economic resilience. The issue of reallocating funds is being discussed at a high level, and a decision is likely to be made in the coming months.
