Hungary cheers Trump’s return, sees shift toward sovereignty and peace

Hungary is gearing up for a changing world order, embracing diplomatic engagement, peace efforts, and alignment with the new U.S. administration, according to Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, he declared that President Donald Trump’s return marks a crucial turning point, pushing back against the liberal mainstream and restoring national sovereignty in global politics.

“Trump leads with common sense, challenging the ‘woke’ ideology that’s replaced respect with stigma and coercion,” Szijjártó said, blaming this ideological war for fueling international conflicts—especially in Ukraine. Hungary, sitting at the conflict’s doorstep, has suffered heavily from the war’s ripple effects. “The international liberal elite attacked anyone advocating for peace,” he argued, while praising China’s Friends of Peace initiative and high-level U.S.-Russia talks in Riyadh as promising steps toward resolution.

Szijjártó also warned that the United Nations risks irrelevance if it refuses to adapt. He called for bold reforms, slashing bureaucratic bloat, and increasing efficiency. Hungary, he added, stands ready to host more U.N. agencies to support this transformation.

Orbán: “The Wind is Blowing in Our Favor”

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán echoed Szijjártó’s optimism, celebrating what he called a historic shift in global politics. In a Facebook video, he told supporters that Western Europe’s liberal dominance is fading, giving Hungary the ideological upper hand.

“For years, we were fighting against an international machine,” Orbán said. “Now, suddenly, what we’ve been advocating all along is recognized as the right path. This is a turning point for Hungary.”

With Trump back in charge, Hungary sees new opportunities for diplomacy, greater sovereignty, and a chance for real peace—a vision Orbán’s government is eager to seize.
