Trump cuts US funding to Hungarian media over Paks II misinformation

The Trump administration has cut U.S. funding for Hungarian media outlets accused of spreading misinformation about the Paks II nuclear project. Documents reveal that under Biden, media platforms critical of the project received financial support from the U.S. embassy, USAID, and organizations linked to George Soros.

Nuclear expert Zsolt Hárfás pointed out that these outlets exploited the public’s limited understanding of nuclear energy to push an agenda against Hungary’s plans. Major opposition media, including 444, G7, and Klubrádió, benefited from U.S. funds, but the new administration has now halted payments, saving 173 million forints.

Hárfás also noted that Radio Free Europe used American taxpayer money to undermine Paks II and cast doubt on Rosatom, the Russian company supplying the technology. Other anti-nuclear campaigns were backed by the Open Society Institute and Austria’s Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism, which funded legal challenges against the project.

The Hungarian government insists that energy policy is a national issue and remains committed to Paks II. Hárfás stressed that Hungary must continue defending its nuclear expansion, given the persistent external attacks against it.
