A nationwide strike organized by the Ver.di trade union is set to cause significant disruptions in Germany’s public transportation system on Friday, February 21, leading to widespread delays and cancellations of buses and trains.
The strike will affect public transport in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, and Bremen.
In Berlin, the strike began on Thursday and will last for 48 hours, disrupting bus, tram, and subway services. Only bus routes operated by private companies under contract with BVG will remain in operation.
The Ver.di union has called for the strike as part of its push for higher wages for public sector workers. The union is demanding an 8% salary increase, with a minimum raise of €350 per month.
