President Donald Trump stated that a review of the storage is planned to ensure the gold is still there.
He emphasized that if there is insufficient gold, it would cause significant disappointment. This comment came amid discussions about a potential reevaluation of the value of gold in the country’s reserves, although sources report that Trump’s economic advisers are not seriously considering this idea.
More than half of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s gold reserves are stored at Fort Knox. Recently, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul suggested that Elon Musk conduct a check of the storage, after a user on X expressed doubt that the 4,580 tons of gold were still there, as the last inspection was done in 1974.
Trump also announced that Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will head a new Department of Government Efficiency, which aims to reduce wasteful spending and restructure federal agencies. However, Ramaswamy later indicated that he might step down from this role, possibly due to plans to run for governor of Ohio.
