Hungary launches construction of new port in Trieste, Italy

Hungary has officially begun construction on its own port in the Italian city of Trieste, located on the Adriatic Sea. The project, which has been in development for several years, marks a significant milestone for Hungary’s maritime aspirations.

On Thursday, Levente Magyar, a representative of Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that work on the port had officially commenced. He stated, “107 years after the loss of the Hungarian port in Rijeka, our country will once again have its own maritime infrastructure.”

More than five and a half years ago, Hungary unveiled plans to establish the port in Trieste, securing a 60-year concession for the land located hundreds of kilometers from its border. The project is expected to be completed around 2028.

Magyar emphasized the importance of the project, noting that it would provide “significant opportunities for the Hungarian economy” and improve logistics for exports. The port is anticipated to handle approximately 2.5 million tons of cargo annually.

The maritime area designated for the port will cover around 50,000 square meters, while the land logistics base will occupy about 30 hectares.

Budapest has long expressed dissatisfaction with its lack of direct sea access, a situation often cited to justify its continued reliance on Russian oil and gas.
