Scientists try to solve the mystery of the “swarm of earthquakes” off Santorini

French and Greek researchers have joined forces to investigate the causes of the persistent seismic activity in the Santorini region.

Experts from the research center of the Côte d’Azur University and the Institute of Geodynamics in Greece plan to install seismographs in the waters between the islands of Amorgos and Santorini. This will allow for more precise monitoring of seismic activity in the area, where a series of earthquakes has already been recorded. In early February, due to the tremors, 10,000 people were evacuated from Amorgos.

Meanwhile, increased seismic activity is also causing concern among residents of the Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic region west of Naples. On February 18, more than 550 tremors were recorded there. Authorities closed schools in local communities and placed emergency services on high alert.

Although the earthquakes in the Phlegraean Fields do not exceed 4.0 on the Richter scale, their proximity to the surface makes them strongly felt by residents.
