U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he believes a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky is necessary to end Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. He made this statement to journalists at the White House on Friday, February 21.
He also expressed hope that Ukraine will soon sign an agreement allowing the U.S. access to its mineral resources.
Ukrainians are very brave people in every sense you can imagine. But we are spending our resources on a country that is very, very far away, said the U.S. president.
Notably, this call came after Trump expressed doubts in an interview with Fox News about the importance of Zelensky’s participation in peace negotiations. Earlier, Trump had made harsh remarks about the Ukrainian leader, calling him a “dictator without elections.”
Additionally, on February 18, a meeting of senior officials from Russia and the U.S. took place in Saudi Arabia without Ukrainian representatives. During the talks, the parties agreed to reduce tensions in their bilateral relations and continue working on preparing negotiations on Russia’s war against Ukraine.
