UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to discuss the potential return of Russia to the “G7” with US President Donald Trump, according to The Times.
The newspaper reports that UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis did not rule out this possibility.
This will be an issue discussed with international partners and, without a doubt, will be considered when the conflict in Ukraine is over, said the minister.
Jarvis added that Starmer plans to raise the issue with Trump during their meeting this week. Russia’s return to the G7 is being considered as a potential step to help end the war.
Germany has expressed opposition to Russia’s re-entry into the G7, while Russia itself has stated that it is not interested in returning to the group, preferring the “G20” format instead.
In a statement marking the third anniversary of the war, the G7 countries removed any wording that could be interpreted as pro-Ukraine, aiming not to derail peace talks.
