Nearly half of Germans oppose further aid to Ukraine, new poll reveals

A recent poll suggests nearly half of Germans want to halt financial and military aid to Ukraine. Conducted by Insa for t-online on February 24, just after Germany’s elections, the survey found that 46% of respondents favored stopping assistance altogether.

Support for continued aid remains low, with only 28% backing both financial and military help. Another 7% preferred financial aid alone, while 8% wanted only weapons sent. Meanwhile, 6% were undecided, and 3% felt indifferent.

Age played a major role in the divide—57% of young adults aged 18 to 29 opposed further support, while only 28% of those over 70 felt the same. Gender differences were also evident: 51% of women wanted to end aid, compared to 40% of men. Conversely, 35% of men backed continued assistance, versus just 22% of women.

Regional disparities were stark, with 61% of East Germans favoring an end to aid compared to 42% in the West. Political leanings also influenced opinions. Green Party voters showed the strongest support, with 72% advocating for continued military and financial aid. In contrast, 79% of Alternative for Germany and hard-left BSW supporters wanted to cut support entirely.

Interestingly, these findings clash with an earlier February 2025 survey by the Elections Research Group, which reported that 67% of Germans still backed military aid, with 27% even urging an increase.
