South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol apologized to citizens during the final hearing of his impeachment case in the Constitutional Court.
He stated that the declaration of martial law was made in the interests of the state and the people, but acknowledged that it caused inconvenience and confusion among citizens, for which he expressed sincere regret. The President also mentioned that he feels guilty for those who found themselves in difficult situations due to their support for him, specifically those who were detained following the riots in Seoul in January.
Yoon thanked the citizens for their support despite his shortcomings and expressed gratitude to those who continue to believe in him. He emphasized that he will work diligently to become a pillar for a prosperous South Korea and is ready to accept criticism and reproaches.
During the final session, the Constitutional Court of South Korea summarized the arguments from both sides regarding the impeachment case, and it is expected that a decision will be made on February 27 regarding the constitutionality of the refusal by acting President Choi Sang-mok to appoint the candidate for Constitutional Court judge, Ma Eun-hyeok. If the court accepts the parliament’s request, it may affect the composition of the court and extend the impeachment hearings.
It is expected that the final decision on Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment will be made by mid-March. If his removal is approved, presidential elections will be scheduled within 60 days. If the impeachment is rejected, Yoon will continue to carry out his duties.
