Georgescu supporters protest outside the Prosecutor General’s Office

Calin Georgescu, a former candidate for the presidency of Romania, could face up to 20 years in prison. The prosecutor’s office has filed charges against Georgescu, who was arrested on the road the day before.

The politician is accused of six charges, including unconstitutional activities, false financial reporting, and involvement in extremist groups. The results of the December elections, in which Georgescu took first place in the first round, were annulled. Authorities published data alleging that Russia financed a large social media campaign in support of Georgescu. This scandal led to a political crisis.

Georgescu’s team accused the authorities of trying to prevent his candidacy in the upcoming elections. However, representatives of the Romanian Electoral Commission told Euronews that the registration of new candidates has not yet begun.

Leading politicians in the country are calling for calm and support for the independence of the judicial system, asserting that the investigation should proceed according to the law. However, some politicians view the investigation as an attempt to prevent Georgescu from running again.
