According to a recent poll, most Germans are skeptical about banning the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD).
The flash poll, conducted for RTL and ntv, found that while an overwhelming majority of respondents believe all other parties should rule out forming a coalition with AfD at the federal level, they do not support banning the party altogether.
41% of respondents favored a ban on AfD, while 52% opposed it.
Opinions were divided on whether AfD could gain similar levels of support in western Germany. 44% believe that in a few years, the party could achieve similar results in the west, while 49% consider this unlikely.
In the last federal elections, AfD became the second-strongest party overall, gaining significant support, especially in eastern Germany, where it was the leading party in all five eastern states.
The flash poll surveyed 1,015 people in Germany, with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
Meanwhile, Friedrich Merz, the candidate for chancellor from the CDU/CSU bloc, confirmed on February 25 that he has started coalition talks with the Social Democrats.
