A mass protest in Athens, marking the second anniversary of the train disaster that claimed 57 lives, escalated into clashes with the police. Greek law enforcement used tear gas against demonstrators.
The reasons for the use of special measures remain unclear, but the deployment of tear gas was preceded by the sound of stun grenades. As the gas spread, many protesters began to flee, struggling to breathe. However, some remained in place, with a few throwing objects at the police.
At least one person was injured, reportedly a photojournalist. He was seen with a bandaged head and blood on his face.
Earlier, Open TV reported that a group of hooded individuals attempted to incite unrest in Syntagma Square, near the parliament, but were driven away by other protesters.
Protests are taking place across the country as people demand justice and a full investigation into the causes of the disaster.
