Fast food boom continues in Czech Republic as traditional dining declines

While traditional restaurants in the Czech Republic face challenges, fast food establishments and bistros are thriving. These quick-service spots now make up 12–15% of all food service businesses in the country, according to data from the POS system Dotykačka, with burger-focused restaurants and Asian bistros leading the trend.

“In the last five years alone, the number of such establishments has tripled, and total sales have more than doubled,” says Vladimír Sirotek, Director of Analysis at Dotykačka.

Fast food surged in popularity in 2022 and 2023 before stabilizing last year. Major cities, particularly Prague, are expected to see continued growth in branded fast-food concepts with the arrival of global chains like Popeyes, Wendy’s, and Five Guys.

“Competition between branded formats will be particularly intense in Prague, which is great because it will drive innovation and help keep prices stable,” says Luboš Kastner, chairman of the gastronomy section of the Chamber of Commerce.

To remain competitive, fast-food businesses must have a strong concept, streamlined operations, minimal staffing, and effective marketing. “They should focus on quality rather than low prices,” Kastner adds.

McDonald’s welcomes the growing competition. “The growing interest in the Czech Republic shows that the local market still has significant potential for quick-service restaurants,” a company representative said.

Currently, the country has 135 KFC locations, 127 McDonald’s outlets, and 10 more openings planned this year. Meanwhile, Popeyes, which entered the Czech market in November 2023, already has four locations, with another set to open soon in Brno. “The arrival of Popeyes in November 2023 changed the market, and we see other brands taking inspiration. New recipes are emerging, and Czech customers will benefit,” said Popeyes CEO Marko Blažević.
