Kremlin reacts to U.S. suspension of military aid to Ukraine, calls for lifting of sanctions

The Kremlin has expressed approval of the reported decision to suspend U.S. military aid to Ukraine, “if it is true,” suggesting that this move could prompt Kyiv to engage in peace talks.

Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Kremlin, made this statement, noting that the cessation of arms supplies could be a step towards peace.

“We still need to learn the details, but if this is true, this is a decision that could indeed prompt the Kyiv regime to enter into the peace process,” Peskov said in response to reports about the suspension of U.S. aid.

He pointed out that the U.S. has been the primary supplier of military aid to Ukraine. “It is obvious that until now, the U.S. has been the main supplier of this war,” he remarked. Peskov further emphasized that if the U.S. halts its supplies, it could be “the best contribution to the cause of peace.”

However, he also noted that some European countries have indicated they will continue supporting Ukraine and may try to compensate for the reduction in supplies. “So they will probably try to compensate for the volumes of ammunition and everything else that is depleting. But, of course, the largest volume has still been coming from the United States and through U.S. channels,” Peskov explained.

He also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the situation, saying, “Let’s see. Right now, there is a lot of fragmented information, most of it coming from sources. And of course, we need to see how the situation develops on the ground.”

Additionally, the Kremlin reiterated its stance on U.S. sanctions, calling for their removal to normalize Russian-American relations. “Our attitude towards these sanctions is well known — we consider them illegal. And, of course, when it comes to normalizing bilateral relations, they need to be freed from this negative burden of so-called sanctions,” Peskov concluded.
