The European Union has announced the development of an alternative to the Starlink satellite communication system, which is expected to be operational by 2030.
A representative of the European Commission, Thomas Renier, revealed this during a press conference in Brussels. According to him, the project is called GovSatCom and aims to create a unified satellite communications system for the needs of EU countries.
GovSatCom will utilize existing satellite capabilities provided by individual member states to create a single network that enhances security, reliability, and independence from foreign operators. This initiative is intended to strengthen the EU’s position in high-speed internet and satellite services, particularly for government and defense purposes.
Additionally, the new EU project is focused on developing digital infrastructure and reducing reliance on private companies such as the American SpaceX, whose Starlink system dominates the satellite services market. According to Renier, the creation of the alternative GovSatCom network will be an important step towards digital sovereignty and strengthening Europe’s technological independence.
The project is expected to be completed by 2030, but work is already underway to integrate satellite resources from various EU countries and establish the basic infrastructure needed to implement this ambitious plan.
