A massive fire broke out overnight in the city of Arnhem, in the eastern Netherlands, engulfing buildings in the historic center. The blaze started around 03:45 in one of the shops before quickly spreading to about ten 18th- and 19th-century buildings.
According to NOS, the structures in this area are mostly wooden, which contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. The buildings, which house shops on the ground floor and apartments above, were urgently evacuated. Residents were temporarily accommodated at the city hall. It remains unclear if there are any casualties.
Firefighters are focusing on containing the fire to prevent further spread. Emergency crews are battling the blaze from the outside and spraying water on nearby buildings.
The historic city center has been cordoned off, and residents have been advised to keep their windows closed and turn off ventilation systems. According to fire department officials, the firefighting efforts may last throughout the day.
