Russia has officially appointed Alexander Darchiev as its new ambassador to the United States. Before this, Darchiev served as the head of the Department of North America at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On March 6, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree appointing Darchiev as Russia’s ambassador to the U.S. and as Russia’s permanent observer to the Organization of American States in Washington.
The previous Russian ambassador to the U.S. completed his term in October 2024.
The decision to swiftly appoint new ambassadors was announced following talks between American and Russian delegations in Saudi Arabia on February 18. Washington sent Moscow a note of agreement for Darchiev’s appointment after further negotiations on February 27 in Istanbul.
At 64 years old, Alexander Darchiev previously headed the North Atlantic Department at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Throughout his diplomatic career, Darchiev spent a total of 10 years in the Russian diplomatic mission in Washington. From 1997 to 2002, he served as an advisor at the embassy, and from 2005 to 2010, he was a counselor and minister-counselor.
