Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has expressed opposition to the idea of Slovakia being under France’s nuclear umbrella.
His comments came amid criticism from the opposition regarding Slovakia’s absence at informal meetings in Paris and London, where discussions on the new EU defense architecture took place.
Fico characterized these meetings as military-focused and stated that he had no intention of participating.
“The new issue is whether I will go to Paris for the meeting of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And do you know what that meeting should be about? The nuclear umbrella. Thank you very much… I don’t want Slovakia to be part of France’s nuclear umbrella,” he said, adding that he does not want French President Emmanuel Macron to have a say in where nuclear weapons could be used.
Previously, President Macron had confirmed his willingness to discuss the extension of France’s “nuclear umbrella” to other European allies.
