Sweden is considering tougher measures to deal with illegal immigration, including longer detention times and the use of electronic ankle monitors, similar to proposals in Italy.
Following talks between Swedish and Italian officials, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the benefits of stronger cooperation on migration challenges between the two countries.
The nationalist Sweden Democrats are backing stricter detention rules, arguing that it’s vital for security to detain the right individuals long enough. The party is concerned that Kristersson’s Moderates are not fully addressing the dangers posed by illegal migration. There’s growing skepticism, particularly after Migration Minister Johan Forssell stated that Sweden would remain a multicultural society, which Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Åkesson found concerning.
Sweden Democrat spokesman Ludvig Aspling also proposed new measures, including expanded search powers to identify illegal migrants and a database with asylum seekers’ photos and fingerprints. He criticized Forssell for not fully grasping the seriousness of the issue, despite being responsible for migration.
