The European Parliament criticized Macron’s nuclear weapons proposal as crazy

The leader of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) faction in the European Parliament, Harald Vilimsky, criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to include France’s nuclear weapons in the European security strategy, calling it “madness.”

On March 5, Macron stated that Russia poses a threat to France and Europe and proposed starting discussions on using French nuclear weapons to protect the entire EU, citing changes in the U.S. position on Ukraine and their role in NATO.

In a statement from FPÖ, Vilimsky called this approach “incredible madness.” He noted that after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented a military spending plan of 800 billion euros, Macron now wants to escalate even further. The member of parliament emphasized that such actions threaten Europe’s security rather than protect it.

In his opinion, nuclear weapons should not be part of the EU’s peacekeeping strategy. Vilimsky pointed out that instead of prioritizing diplomacy, EU leadership continues to escalate armament and military rhetoric.
