The Czech government is drafting a bill aimed at speeding up the deportation of foreign nationals staying illegally. The document also includes provisions for increased control over asylum seekers, expanded medical screenings, faster legal procedures, and lower social standards for migrants.
As explained by MP Eva Dekrua from ODS, the coalition intends to discuss the draft law with the opposition before its official presentation. Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan (STAN) noted that the main goal of the initiative is to make the deportation process more efficient. Specifically, if a migrant is deported, they will no longer be able to apply for asylum. It is also planned to combine the procedures for rejecting international protection applications and decisions on return into a single procedure.
Additionally, courts will be required to consider the possibility of deporting convicted foreigners. Security database checks will be strengthened, new epidemiological tests will be introduced, and the police will gain the right to analyze migrant mobile phone data.
Not only the Czech Republic but also Poland is tightening its migration measures. The country’s authorities have started a mass deportation of migrants suspected of crimes.
According to Eurostat data, 484,000 citizens of third countries were expected to leave the European Union in 2023, but only 20% of them actually returned to their home countries. At the same time, the number of illegal border crossings into the EU decreased by 38%, reaching 239,000 cases.
