Representatives of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party believe that Germany needs to acquire nuclear weapons if the United States decides to withdraw its “nuclear umbrella” from Europe, Spiegel reports.
According to AfD politician Rüdiger Lucassen, changes in the global situation require Europe to establish an independent security system. He argues that for this to happen, Germany must not only obtain nuclear weapons but also reinstate mandatory military service for everyone, including women.
Our country needs its own nuclear weapons and universal military conscription. This will require amendments to the Basic Law, said Lucassen, a former Bundeswehr colonel.
He emphasized that Germany must develop nuclear deterrence capabilities within the framework of European strategic autonomy and a collective security system.
A similar stance was expressed by AfD Bundestag member Hannes Gnauk. He stated that Germany needs its “own nuclear shield” and underscored the importance of strategic cooperation with Russia, particularly in trade and energy sectors.
If the United States leaves NATO, Germany must take on a leading role within the Alliance, according to AfD representatives.
