After halting military aid to Ukraine, Trump has indicated that new sanctions could be imposed on Russia if they contribute to achieving peace in Ukraine.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the U.S. would not hesitate to introduce a “full” package of sanctions targeting Russian energy resources if it helps to secure a ceasefire, according to Bloomberg.
It’s worth recalling that shortly after his inauguration, Trump mentioned that he would not rule out sanctions on Russian energy if Russia refused to engage in negotiations.
However, these considerations have yet to yield practical consequences. Trump has already initiated discussions with Russia and claims that Moscow is seeking to end the war. In particular, after a dispute at the White House, he said, “Putin wants peace, and Zelensky intends to continue fighting.”
Trump and his team have also not ruled out lifting sanctions on Russia in the event of a ceasefire. According to U.S. media reports, the White House has already instructed officials to explore the possibility of lifting some sanctions on Russia.
