The Czech government intends to accelerate the deportation of illegal migrants and expand control over foreigners residing in the country without permission. This was announced by Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Interior Minister Vít Rakušan.
One of the key proposals is to check the mobile phones of detained foreigners without documents to establish their identity. A group of lawmakers from the ruling parties (ODS, KDU-ČSL, TOP 09, and STAN) has developed a comprehensive proposal aimed at speeding up the deportation of illegal migrants, strengthening security checks, and preventing the entry of potentially risky migrant groups.
The main measures include:
Accelerating the deportation process for illegal residents by combining decisions on the denial of international protection and deportation into a single procedure.
Restricting the right to apply for asylum for individuals subject to deportation.
Strengthening oversight of asylum seekers who abuse the social system.
Conducting health and epidemiological risk assessments.
In 2023, the number of people detained for illegally crossing the Czech border decreased by 91%, totaling 420 individuals compared to 4,742 the previous year. Authorities also stated that cases of using international airports for illegal migration have reached a record low level.
The government hopes to implement these new measures before the upcoming elections to enhance national security and curb illegal migration schemes in the Czech Republic.
