According to a survey conducted by the research company CSA for the newspaper Journal du Dimanche, 59% of French citizens support an increase in the defense budget, even if it requires cuts in funding for other sectors.
41% of respondents opposed such a redistribution. The idea of increasing military spending received the most support among French people over the age of 65 (71%) and the least support among those aged 25–34 (47%).
The survey was conducted among 1,010 people, but details regarding the date of the survey and the margin of error were not specified.
The previously approved French budget for 2025 includes significant reductions in government spending, but defense funding will remain at a high level. The military sector will receive an additional €3.3 billion, increasing its budget to €50.5 billion.
French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu later expressed his intention to nearly double the defense budget, raising it to €100 billion per year.
